The following resources can help support your Local Wellness Policy. This is not a comprehensive list. Resources on the issues of student health and wellness, nutrition and physical activity are continually being developed, released, edited, and re-released.

North Carolina Communities in Schools (CIS)
North Carolina Communities in Schools (CIS) helps kids stay in school and prepare for life. Visit the Web site for resources, newsletters and upcoming events.
North Carolina Healthy Schools
The goal of North Carolina Healthy Schools is to create a working infrastructure between education and health to enable schools and communities to create a Coordinated School Health Program. North Carolina Healthy Schools provides resources, tools and policies that support a coordinated school health program, including "Effective School Health Advisory Councils: Moving from Policy to Action."
North Carolina NET Program
The North Carolina Nutrition Education and Training or NET Program, through its local, state and federal partnerships, provides leadership in promoting healthful eating habits for our state's children. NET strives to integrate mealtime and learning experiences to help children make informed food choices as part of a healthy lifestyle. The NET Program has many resources available to guide the development and assist with implementation of Local Wellness Policy.
North Carolina Parent Teacher Association (PTA)
The North Carolina PTA works to encourage parent and public involvement in the schools.
The Alternative and Safe Schools/Instructional Support Section
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction provides schools and Local Educational Agencies (LEA's) with technical support, resources and training necessary to establish and maintain safe, orderly and caring school environments for students and school personnel.

National Resources

Alliance for a Healthier Generation
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a partnership between the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation, provides resources for schools to create environments that support healthy eating and physical activity for students.
Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH)
The CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) provides data, health resources and assessment tools to help prevent the most serious health risks among children, adolescents and young adults.
National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA)
The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) advocates for national policies and programs that promote healthy eating and physical activity to help reduce the illnesses, disabilities, premature deaths, and costs caused by diet- and inactivity-related diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity. The Web site offers model nutrition and physical activity policies.
School Health Index (SHI)
The School Health Index (SHI) is a detailed self-assessment that schools can use to improve their health and safety policies and programs. The assessment addresses physical activity, nutrition, tobacco prevention needs and safety-related behaviors.
School Nutrition Association (SNA)
The School Nutrition Association (SNA) is a national, nonprofit professional organization that works to ensure all children have access to healthful school meals and nutrition education. They provide guidelines to use when creating Local Wellness Policies for school districts, a report summarizing the characteristics of the wellness policies approved by the 100 largest school districts in the country, a second report examining Local Wellness Policies approved by a wide variety of school districts in 49 states, and frequently asked questions and answers.
USDA Team Nutrition
Team Nutrition is an initiative of the USDA Food and Nutrition Service to support Child Nutrition Programs through training and technical assistance for foodservice, nutrition education for children and their caregivers, and school and community support for healthy eating and physical activity. The Web site contains Local Wellness Policy requirements, sample wellness policies, implementation and evaluation tools and resources and frequently asked questions and answers.

N.C. Department of Public Instruction Child Nutrition Services
The Child Nutrition Services Section is committed to inspiring a brighter future for children by serving and supporting School Nutrition Personnel as they work to restore and maintain the nutritional, operational and financial integrity of the Child Nutrition Programs. The Child Nutrition Programs impact the nutrition, health and the physical well-being of children in public schools, residential child-care institutions and charter schools.
North Carolina NET Program

The Web site provides a variety of resources to promote healthy eating and physical activity, including the Eat Smart: North Carolina's Recommended Standards for All Foods Available in School.

Guidelines for School Health Program to Promote Lifelong Healthy Eating
Guidelines for School Health Programs to Promote Lifelong Healthy Eating identify strategies most likely to be effective in helping young people adopt and maintain a physically active lifestyle.
National Association of State Boards of Education
The National Association of State Boards of Education has publications, articles, policy briefs and maintains an online database of state policies related to school physical education.

North Carolina Resources

Healthy Active Children (HAC)
The Healthy Active Children Policy (HAC) was passed by the North Carolina State School Board in April 2005. The HAC Policy requires each school district to establish and maintain a local School Health Advisory Council. It also requires that a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity shall be provided by schools for all K-8 students daily.
NCPE4ME
NCPE4ME is a Web site designed to keep you informed about physical education, health education, athletics and sports medicine in North Carolina and the nation. The Web site contains resources, Power Point presentations and reports from study committees on physical education in North Carolina Schools.
North Carolina Department of Transportation - Safe Routes to School Program
Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a program that enables and encourages children to walk and bicycle to school; makes walking and bicycling to school a safe and more appealing transportation option, and facilitates the planning, development, and implementation of projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution in the vicinity of school.
Eat Smart, Move More North Carolina
Eat Smart, Move More NC is a statewide movement to promote increased opportunities for physical activity and healthy eating through policy and environmental change. The Web site provides a variety of resources to promote healthy eating and physical activity, including Move More: North Carolina's Recommended Standards for Physical Activity in Schools.

National Resources

American Alliance for Health, Physical Education Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD)
The AAHPERD is the largest organization of professionals supporting and assisting those involved in physical education, leisure, fitness, dance, health promotion, and education and all specialties related to achieving a healthy lifestyle. The AAHPERD Web site contains position statements related to physical activity and physical education in school.
American Heart Association (AHA)
The American Heart Association is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is: "Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke." The American Heart Association provides a wealth of resources and research on physical activity and healthy eating.
Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH)
CATCH is an evidence-based Coordinated School Health Program designed to promote physical activity and healthy food choices and prevent tobacco use in elementary school-aged children.
National Association of State Boards of Education
The National Association of State Boards of Education provides publications, articles and policy briefs and also maintains an online database of state policies related to school physical education.
PE Central
PE Central is a Web site for health and physical education teachers, parents and students. To combat the high obesity rate, PE Central offers programs like Log It and Get Active Stay Active where teachers enroll their schools and then students register so they can participate.
Sports, Play and Active Recreation for Kids (SPARK)
SPARK provides tools and resources to maximize physical education class activity time, without sacrificing learning. Materials are available for early childhood, elementary, middle school and high school physical education.
